Jill Scott's mother Joyce Scott gave birth to Jill on April 4, 1972, located in Philadelphia Pennsylvania. Being a single girl, she was raised also through her maternal grandparents. Scott completed her studies at The Philadelphia High School for Girls. She then enrolled at Temple University. In between two job opportunities and studying secondary education, she continued her studies. She planned on becoming an instructor of English in a secondary institution. The dream, however was short-lived when she quit college after three year of studies and was a teachers' aide. The path she took to her career started as a spoken-word artist who performed her work in live poetry readings. Then she teamed up together with Amir Quest Love Thompson from The Roots. You Got Me, their joint song, was written by them. The singer was at the Roots performance. Later, she secured collaborations stars like Eric Benet Will Smith and Common. She also gained experience in performing during the Canada Tour of Broadway's musical Rent. She became the first signed artist to label Hidden Beach Recordings label.
